MCI (Making Connections Intervention) provides targeted literacy intervention for struggling readers in middle school and beyond. At the heart of the program is explicit and direct comprehension instruction. Through carefully scaffolded lessons struggling students will learn to apply strategies to master comprehension skills.
Woven through every lesson are multiple opportunities to build students' vocabulary and fluency. Additional support for students struggling with decoding or writing skills can be found in two new components MCI Word Study and MCI Writing.
Student Editions contain fiction and nonfiction texts. Readability levels and text layout are designed for struggling readers. Students interact with and mark texts, providing a concrete representation of the strategies used by active and purposeful readers. Multiple opportunities to develop, practice, and master comprehension skills and strategies are provided for each text.
Teacher Editions provide comprehensive, scaffolded lesson plans—from modeling, to guiding, to coaching to independent application. Every lesson includes before reading, during reading, and after reading support. Point-of-use techniques accommodate students of varied abilities, including English language learners. The Assessment CD-ROM includes informal and formal formative assessments & summative assessments, plus recording sheets to monitor student progress.
Student Library books include nonfiction, fiction, and graphic novels. These high-interest books give students the opportunity to further practice the newly developed skill and independently apply it to a longer text. Two books are available for each unit, (twelve books per level). Readability levels match the Student Edition readability levels.
Support all students with audio recordings of the Comprehension Student Edition. Your students will hear all reading passages read aloud with fluency, plus unit openers and skills pages.
